Reliable mobility data is essential for modern mobility systems. From navigation and traffic management to logistics and traveller information, data increasingly underpins how people and goods move. In the Netherlands, mobility data is not just viewed as a technical asset, but as critical public infrastructure that supports accessibility, safety and sustainability.

When people think of infrastructure, they usually think of roads, bridges, tunnels or railway lines. But in an increasingly digital mobility world, data is becoming a crucial form of infrastructure too.
Navigation systems, traffic information, smart traffic lights, traffic management systems and logistics applications only function when they have access to reliable, up-to-date and accessible data. Without that information, mobility becomes less predictable, less efficient and, ultimately, less safe.
What stands out internationally is that mobility data is increasingly regarded as critical public infrastructure, rather than simply a by-product of mobility services. As such, data forms an important foundation for a well-functioning mobility system.

A strong example is the collaboration between the Dutch national roads authority, provinces, municipalities and transport regions within the National Data Portal for Road Traffic (NDW). By collecting, validating and sharing data, these organisations create a trusted picture of the mobility system on which both public and private services can build.
This approach fits within a broader trend in which mobility data is regarded as part of a country’s digital infrastructure. Trusted data enables connected mobility services, traffic management systems and digital traveller information to function effectively.
The Netherlands also plays an active role in European initiatives focused on the standardisation and interoperability of mobility data. After all, traffic, logistics and travellers move across national borders. This requires reliable and exchangeable data between countries, systems and organisations.
What often surprises international visitors is that the discussion in the Netherlands is not simply about collecting more data, but primarily about improving its quality, reliability and accessibility.
The question is shifting from “How do we collect data?” to “How do we make data usable for societal goals such as accessibility, road safety and sustainability?”
That is why mobility data is increasingly seen as a basic public utility on which new mobility services, traffic management applications and innovative mobility solutions can be built.
Ultimately, collaboration between public authorities, knowledge institutions and private organisations determines how effectively that data can be used. This public-private approach remains one of the defining strengths of the Dutch mobility ecosystem.
