From 6 – 8 February the Smart Mobility Embassy participated in the Smart & Green Mobility Innovation mission to the Saxony region (Germany). It was a visit from the Province of Noord-Brabant (NL) to The Free State of Saxony. Saxony and Noord-Brabant are both pioneering regions in smart and electric mobility.
“Saxony is known for the Fraunhofer Institute with high level research on smart and electric mobility and Volkswagen with it’s strong growth in production capacity to produce electric vehicles.” although Minister Anne-Marie Spierings from the Province of Noord-Brabant, who led the delegation.
Saxony is home to the Volkswagen Transparent Factory. The visit to this impressive factory was one of the highlights of the mission program. A tour trough the factory submerged the delegates in the world of Volkswagen e-mobility. Part of the visit to Volkswagen focused on the VW incubator program. The Dutch startups participating in the mission were able to present their organizations to a Volkswagen jury. Three Dutch startups have conquered a place in Volkswagen incubator program “Gläserne Manufaktur” in Dresden. These are SPIKE from Eindhoven, GoodMoovs from Helmond and Greenflux from Amsterdam. These startups will be back in Dresden in May to further explore the collaboration with Volkswagen.
During the visit to the Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems, studies and projects related to connected/automated driving, eMobility and charging technology were shared and discussed. Several demonstrations showed innovations, for example a simulation of a traffic scenarios with robots and a new type of underfloor charging technology.
On the final morning of the mission, a visit was paid to the FSD, the official German Central agency for developing specifications and defining standards for testing functions and systems in vehicles. At the FSD the delegates were offered to test-drive the Tesla-X, using autopilot.
The Innovation Mission was organized by FIER Automotive & Mobility and APPM Management Consultants on behalf of the Province of Noord-Brabant. The Saxony region can be characterized as the development and production region of Germany in the field of green and smart mobility. In Saxony you will find the factories of the future of Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. The large suppliers are also located in Saxony with development and production locations.

The members of the Smart Mobility Embassy will return to the Saxony region in May this year for the International Transport Forum. We look forward to further collaborate with the smart mobility experts from the region and share knowledge and expertise to accelerate smart mobility innovations.
To meet higher demand for the VW e-Golf, production capacity at the Transparent Factory has increased. From March 2018, production of the electric Volkswagen increased step-by-step from 35 to 72 vehicles per day.
